2007 Quality of Life in the Marine Corps Study

DC M&RA sponsored the re-administration of the Marine Corps QOL study in October-November 2007. QOL studies were previously conducted in 1993, 1998, and 2002. The intent of the current study was to determine how Marines' and spouses' perceptions of, and satisfaction with, QOL have changed over the last 15 years (particularly in light of the increased operational tempo in support of the Global War on Terror). Results from the current study have been directly compared to the findings of the prior three studies.

Surveys were administered by the HQMC Study Team or a command representative to approximately 4,800 active duty Marines assigned to USMC installations; via mail to 8,200 active duty Marines not assigned to USMC installations; by recruiting station representatives to approximately 4,000 production recruiters; and via mail to 9,300 spouses of active duty Marines. Over 8,000 active duty surveys and 2,172 spouse surveys were received and analyzed by the study contractor, Northrop Grumman.

The survey measured the QOL satisfaction of Marines and spouses in a wide variety of life areas (life domains). These domains include such areas as housing, compensation, and healthcare to marriage, friendships, and children.

The most significant 2007 study finding was that despite the Global War on Terror and the high operational tempo, Marines and family members are satisfied with their mission and the support provided by the Marine Corps.  QOL satisfaction has not decreased since the 2002 study and has improved in some aspects. The prior QOL study in 2002 had found an "across-the-board"  decrease on QOL satisfaction of Marines, i.e., in each of the life domains, as well as with life overall in the Corps.
