Congratulations to Lt Col Joseph Gavin, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and GySgt Sara Pacheco, Quantico, VA, who have been chosen as the 2017 Marine Corps Athletes of the year.

The Marine Corps Athlete of the Year is awarded annually to one male and one female active duty Marine. Marines who have excelled in varsity, All-Marine, national and international competitions are eligible to be nominated for the award.  Nominations go through the chain of command and the Athletic Director at the athlete’s local installation. Nominations are then sent to Headquarters Marine Corps where the winners are selected. The winners were chosen based on their athletics skills and how well they embody Marine Corps values.

Marine Corps Sports Programs are designed to enhance the fitness and resilience of Marines and their families and functions to support alternative Physical Training (PT) options, military to military engagement, and the development of unit cohesion.  Sports Programs are directly related to combat readiness and serve as the main mechanism through which a variety of programs, services and activities are provided to Marines and their families.
