Olympics 2012: A slow salute from U.S. Marine after boxing bout
08/02/2012 - By Greg Beacham-Associated Press

LONDON — Before U.S. Marine Sgt. Jamel Herring stepped into the Olympic boxing ring for the first time, he gave a soldier's salute to his cheering teammates. Then he thought about his late daughter and said a quick prayer, giving thanks for the strength to reach the ring after a decade of struggle.

And although his opening-round loss hurt, Herring has survived rougher times.

Daniyar Yeleussinov of Kazakhstan ended Herring's Olympic aspirations with a 19-9 victory Tuesday in their light welterweight bout.

On to London: USMC boxer Jamel Herring hopes to bring home Olympic gold
07/18/2012 - Rick Scoppe, The Daily News

Since earning a spot on the U.S. Olympic boxing team, Jamel Herring has been busy.

The 25-year-old sergeant based out of Camp Lejeune has been to Las Vegas, where he along with the rest of his teammates received a standing ovation. He won the Title Tournament in the middle of June in Memphis, Tenn.

A trip to Cuba for a series of bouts with boxers from the Ukraine was cancelled, and he took some leave to head home to the Long Island, N.Y., hamlet of Coram, where he trained with the man who got him started in the ring.

It's always forward' for USMC wrestler Donald Simmons
04/24/2012 - Rick Scoppe, The Daily News, Jacksonville, NC

Donald Simmons says there’s not much difference in the attitude he carries as a Marine or a wrestler.
Other than their uniforms and what they carry (or don’t) into battle, there’s little difference between the two disciplines in the view of the 22-year-old Halifax, Pa., native.
“We have the same attitude,” Simmons said. “It’s go head first, straight in and just battle and see what happens. Always going forward, and that’s what makes us pretty good wrestlers as Marines.”
Simmons cites his own time on the mat as an example. The corporal had never wrestled Greco-Roman until he joined the Marine Corps wrestling team less than two years ago. But he took the “always forward” attitude he learned as a Marine onto the mat.

Staff Sgt. DePatto hopes it's his time at Olympic wrestling trials
04/23/2012 - Rick Scoppe, The Daily News, Jacksonville, NC

It’s his time.
Coach Dan Hicks says it’s so, and Donovan DePatto didn’t disagree.
The 28-year-old Marine staff sergeant is headed back to the Olympic Trials in wrestling for a second time with a better understanding this time what he’s likely to face on and off the mat in Iowa City, Iowa, before more than 11,000 fans.“I had a pretty good tournament (in 2008). So it’s not going to be surprising,” said DePatto, who wrestles at 60 kilograms in Greco-Roman. “It’s not going to be the whole getting in there and getting shell shocked. But I’m just trying to take it one step at a time and just stay focused on wrestling.”

Hernandez has waited for years for another shot at the Olympic wrestling trials
04/23/2012 - Rick Scoppe, The Daily News, Jacksonville, NC

Moises Hernandez has waited four years for this moment.
The 26-year-old Marine sergeant qualified for the Olympic Trials in 2008, but about two months out tore cartilage in his knee, ending his Olympic hopes.
“So that was a big letdown,” said Hernandez, who wrestles at 96 kilograms in Greco-Roman and is one of six members of the USMC wrestling team to qualify for the trials that begin Saturday in Iowa City, Iowa. “It’s good to have another shot at it.”
In retrospect, Hernandez, who despite being hurt still attended the 2008 trials, isn’t all that disappointed things worked out the way they did.

04/19/2012 - Rick Scoppe, The Daily News, Jacksonville, NC

As he prepares for the Olympic Trials later this week in Iowa City, Iowa, along with five other members of the Marine Corps wrestling team, 245-pound heavyweight Charles Fish is dreaming big.
“It feels pretty good. You kind of go to sleep every night thinking about it and dreaming,” Fish said. “I spend every moment when I’m not (training) kind of like running through my head each person I have to wrestle come trial time, what I have to do to make sure I get to London.”

But it isn’t every day you get a shot at the Olympics.John Cox USMC wrestling

Sheffield hopes to stay focused, wrestle smart in Olympic Trials
04/18/2012 - Rick Scoppe, The Daily News, Jacksonville, NC

Too heavy to get on the mat for his youth wrestling team as an eighth-grader, Joseph Sheffield hopped on the bus, which dropped him off at Ellison High School in Killeen, Texas.

And while his size wasnt an issue there, experience was on both the football field and the wrestling mat.

As an eighth grader wrestling high school kids is good experience, he said.

Not to mention a bit humbling?

A little bit, said Sheffield, who went on to make it to the state high school championships twice at Ellison. But it got me better. So I liked it.
