Warriors Across the Sea Challenge 2013
Andy Marshall, Royal Navy Road Running Team Manger

For the first time the annual Warriors Across the Sea Challenge against the United States Marine Corps was incorporated into the Torbay half marathon. The USMC brought across a strong team of 7 people, 5 male and 2 female runners. The Royal Navy (RN) team of 7 runners, 6 male & 1 female took on the challenge against the USMC.

Conditions on race day were not ideal for fast racing with a strong swirling wind. The course consisted of two laps with the start & finish on Paignton Green. At the 0900 start the USMC straight away stamped their authority on the race with all their runners pulling away from the chasing RN team within the first mile. This proved to be the story of the next hour as the USMC steadily increased their lead. Only Steve Wilsmore finished ahead of any USMC runner. Although most of the RN runners ran to their expectations, we were well beaten by a much stronger (and unfortunately) much younger USMC team.

The race director gave the challenge excellent coverage throughout the day and the crowds were very supportive of both teams.
