Two U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers, Andy Bisek (Colorado Springs, Colo./Minnesota Storm) at 75 kg/165 lbs. and Jon Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) at 80 kg/176 lbs. won gold medals at the Pan American Championships in Mexico City, Mexico on Tuesday.
They were among seven U.S. athletes who win a medal, leading the United States to the team title.
Bisek defeated Ivan de Jesus Duque of Colombia in the finals. It was his second career Pan American Championships title, to go along with his victory in 2012.
Bisek won four matches to earn his title. He defeated a tough Cuban, Julio Bastida, 5-1 in the semifinals. He earned technical falls over Luiz Avendano of Venezuela and Claudio Zuniga of Chile in his first two bouts.
Anderson, competing up a weight class, finished at 3-0. He stopped Matthew Miler of Canada in the finals. His other two wins were technical falls over Bravilio Vargas of Venezuela and Carlos Munoz of Colombia.
Clinching a silver medals were Bryce Saddoris, Camp LeJeune, N.C. (U.S. Marine Corps) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Ellis Coleman (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) at 71 kg/156.5 lbs.
Saddoris fell in the championship finals to Miguel Martinez of Cuba. He won his first two matches by pin over Jair Alexis Cuero of Colombia and Miguel Martinez of Cuba.
Coleman, a 2012 Olympian who was competing up a weight class in this tournament, ended with a 2-1 record in a four-athlete roundrobin
Winning bronze medals were Spenser Mango (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) at 59 kg/130 lbs., Jake Fisher (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 85 kg/187 lbs. and Nikola Bogojevich (Superior, Wis./Minnesota Storm) at 130 kg/286.5 lbs. All three athletes lost matches to Cuban opponents in the preliminary rounds, and came back through the repechage to win their bronze-medal matches.
At 98 kg/216 lbs.,Caylor Williams (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) dropped his opening bout and was not able to enter the repechage when his opponent failed to make the finals.
The women’s freestyle tournament will be held on Wednesday.
