Excellent communication is more than knowing how to speak with others. You must also learn how to listen to what others are saying and use that to begin having meaningful conversations. Here are a few ways you can communicate with others while practicing active listening and form meaningful bonds.

  1. Listen with your eyes, heart, and ears.
  2. Use body language and other visual signals to get a full grasp of what is being communicated.
  3. Try seeing the world from their point of view.
  4. If you don’t’ understand what someone is saying, ask them to repeat what they are saying, or ask clarifying questions.
  5. Practice mirroring. Mirrors neither judge nor give advice. When you practice mirroring, you are stating in your own words the sender’s message.

The Marine Corps Family Team Building (MCFTB) workshop Say What focuses on building solid communication skills with others. For more information, contact your local Marine Corps Family Team Building Office to sign up for the next class or to find out what other classes are available.
