The All-Marine Women’s Rugby Team competed at the Armed Forces Women’s Rugby Championship the weekend of June 25 – 27 in Wilmington, NC. Ending the championship with a two-two record, the Marine team came in third in the competition, trailing the undefeated All-Army team and the three-one All-Air Force Team.
The Marines started the weekend’s competition strong with decisive wins over Coast Guard (25 – 0) and Navy (38 – 0) on Friday night. However, heading into a tough Saturday with only 10 rostered players, the Marines suffered some hard-fought losses.
In their first match of the day against the 2019 champion All-Army Team, the Marines came out strong and very physical. But after a key starter was lost to injury in the first half, the Marines would surrender the game-deciding try (the rugby equivalent of a touchdown), with the match ending five – 0 in favor of the Army. Later that day, the depleted Marine team would fight hard but lose to the Air Force by a score of 14 – five.
Two members of the Marine Team were selected to the All-Armed Forces Tournament Team, which recognizes the seven best players of the tournament. Receiving this honor were Lance Corporal Ubaida Ahmed, assigned to VMGR-252 with MAG-14 aboard MCAS Cherry Point, and Major Stephanie Iacobucci, assigned to the 15th MEU aboard MCB Camp Pendleton.
